In order to countoff your tune in the most effective way it is necessary to know how to ‘say the right words’ in the appropriate groove, feel secure with the internal rhythm (rhythmic subdivision – straight or swing 8ths), and match the musical attitude (mood and tone of voice) to create the vibe you desire. This video shares examples of the most common countoffs needed for straight ahead jazz grooves.

2. Jamey Aebersold (jazz accompaniment) tracks always feature his voice counting off the tune! Just listen to the demo of any of the tracks in iTunes and find an example of the groove you are wanting to count off. Then, buy it, and you’ll hear the count off in the beginning of the tune.
