Phrasing Math is a one-of-kind way to practice your scat singing, helping you to construct your melodic ideas in an organized and communicative way when improvising. The bottom line is: NOTES ALONE do not necessarily create interest. It is IDEAS that create interest.
For scat singers, the goal is to develop a sensitivity to and command of various PHRASE LENGTHS and REPETITION PATTERNS. It is common for developing improvisers to fall into melodic content that is predictable and overly repetitious. The Phrasing Math system can be used to break those bad habits: it provides a specific system to build awareness and techniques for improvising in a way that hooks the attention of the listener and sounds a bit like a story unfolding.
