Playlist: Scatting Practice!

The first in a new Scatting Practice! series: Phrasing Math! Mich first created the idea of Phrasing Math for use with her online students in Japan to help them create shape and form in their scat solos, and it has been working well. In improvisation, we want to build a certain amount of structure then balance it with our creative invention. It becomes essentially the best of both worlds: freedom to invent + a storylike quality that the listener can follow. With Phrasing Math it’s easy to build phrasing patterns that sound song-like and communicative, allowing for the listener to stay engaged during your solos.

Since this is a Scatting Practice! session – get ready to do some singing! We’ll be working with the ScatAbility app, Exercise 4 from Justin Binek’s pack.
